Oneg Shabbat

Oneg Shabbat
Compiled by the Jewish historian Emanuel Ringelblum, the Oneg Shabbat Archive documented the Nazi treatment of the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto and enlisted the testimony of Jews who arrived from German-occupied Europe to the ghetto. Ringelblum was aware of the unprecedented nature of the Nazi persecution of the Jews and was determined to leave behind a record of the events that were destroying the Jewish community. During the final weeks of the ghetto’s existence, Ringelblum and his colleagues collected every available piece of evidence that related to the deportation of the Jews and passed them on to the Polish underground. It was due to Ringelblum’s work that the Allies first learned about the Chelmno death camp and the deportation of 300,000 Jews from the Warsaw ghetto. The Oneg Shabbat or Ringelblum Archive is the most extensive documented source on the Jews during the Nazi occupation of Poland.
