Shoah

Shoah
The Hebrew word for the Holocaust that denotes the destruction of the Jews of Europe. An early use of the term can be found in a booklet published in Jerusalem in 1940 entitled “Shoat Yehudi Polin” (Devastation of Polish Jewry). The word attained wider currency in Palestine, when the Jewish Agency in 1942 began to use the term to describe the Jews being murdered in Europe. Historian Zev Garber points out that the Jewish poet Shaul Tschernichovsky (1875–1943) used the term before a group of colleagues when he referred to “the horrible Shoah that is coming upon us.”
