Baum Group
The largest Jewish resistance group in Nazi Germany, named after its leaders, Herbert and Marianne Baum. The two Berlin communists were also active in Jewish Youth groups so as to move them ideologically in support of the Soviet Union. The Baum Group, although small in number, began their resistance to the Nazis in 1936 when they began to distribute anti-Nazi leaflets and wrote anti-Hitler slogans on walls in Berlin. The group, which never totaled more than 150 individuals, attempted to set fire to an anti-Soviet exhibition, “The Soviet Paradise,” in May 1942, and although they did little damage, the group was arrested. In retaliation for the attack, the Nazis arrested 500 Berlin Jews and subsequently shot almost half of them. The rest were sent first to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, and later deported to Auschwitz. Among those executed were Herbert and Marianne Baum.
